About Roll a D6
Roll a D6 is a small, focused website for rolling dice online and understanding the math behind them, for games, teaching and everyday decisions.
What the site offers
Roll a D6 has one job: give you a fair, readable dice roll in a couple of seconds, and explain the results clearly when you want to know more.
- D6 roller: one six-sided die, or three independent rolls in order with their sum.
- D6 and D12 roller: one six-sided and one twelve-sided die, with both results and the total.
- Average roll of a D6: why the expected value is 3.5, with the working shown.
There is no account to create, no app to download and nothing to pay.
Who it is for
The tools are built for anyone who needs a die and does not have one to hand:
- Board game and tabletop roleplaying players who lost a die or play remotely.
- Teachers and students working through simple probability.
- Anyone settling a quick choice between up to six options.
The roller does not interpret game rules. When a game asks you to roll, follow that game’s own instructions for what the result means.
How the roller works
Each roll uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, the same source browsers use for security features. The site then applies rejection sampling: it discards the small slice of raw random values that would otherwise make some faces slightly more likely. Every face of the D6, and of the D12, keeps an exactly equal chance.
The short tumble animation only displays the chosen result. It does not influence the number. If your browser cannot provide secure random values, the roller shows an error instead of inventing a result.
How the content is produced
Show the working
Every number on the site can be checked by hand. The guides show the calculation, such as 21 ÷ 6 = 3.5, and the probability tables are generated from the same arithmetic rather than typed in.
Tested before publishing
The random-number code is covered by automated tests for the lowest and highest values, repeated results, the order of three rolls and the D6 + D12 totals. The live pages are checked in a real browser on phone, tablet and desktop widths, including keyboard use, reduced motion and JavaScript turned off.
Plain language, no hype
Pages answer the question first and avoid claims that cannot be backed up. The site does not describe the dice as “lucky,” does not predict results and does not offer betting or gambling advice.
Editorial principles
- Accuracy first. Math and descriptions of how the tools behave must match what the code actually does.
- Independence. Roll a D6 is not affiliated with any game publisher or dice manufacturer. Game names are used only to describe where a D6 is commonly used.
- No paid placements. The site currently carries no advertising, affiliate links or sponsored content.
- Corrections. When a reader reports an error and it is confirmed, the page is corrected and its last-updated date changes.
Reviews and corrections
Pages are reviewed whenever the roller’s code or behavior changes, so the explanations stay in step with the tool. If you spot a mistake, a confusing sentence or an accessibility problem, please tell us through the contact page and include the page address.
